About Us
Student Health Service (SHS) provides general and preventative health care to University of Chicago students under the Student Life Fee.
SHS is staffed by University of Chicago Medical Center faculty physicians and nurse practitioners, as well as specialists in sports medicine, travel health, reproductive health, and health education, and provides a variety of services to students.
Please see below for a list of health and wellness services covered by the Student Life Fee. Some services are outside of the Fee, and health insurance (either through the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) or privately acquired) is required to cover these services. Please check with your insurance representative about health coverage for services not covered by the Student Life Fee.
Covered by Student Life Fee ( when performed within the SHS by its clinical staff)
- Health and medical care visits with any SHS provider (SHARE, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Nursing staff, Sports Medicine Physician, Nutrition Services, and Health Education)
- Allergy injection visits
- Annual Pap tests
- Routine physicals
- Annual gonorrhea/chlamydia testing
- Annual anonymous and confidential HIV testing
- Flu shots
- Some basic lab services (inquire at your next visit)
- Selected physical therapy services
- Safer sex products: male and female condoms, lubricants, and dental dams
- Travel health consultations
- Nutritional services
- Health education/promotion materials
NOT covered by the Student Life Fee
- Pharmacy prescription/medications
- Consultation and/or treatment by sub-specialists outside of the SHS clinical staff
- Travel and routine immunizations (some require a copay at the SHS)
- Emergency room care
- Hospitalization
- Long-term mental health care
- Most laboratory tests
- Radiology procedures
- Medical supplies
- Medical record copying or certificates
- Heart station procedures
- Drug testing
- Other services not listed here
